Building Brands and Careers in the Outdoor Industry with Christian Costa
In this episode of The Grit Show, host Chase Baker sits down with Christian Costa, an experienced marketing professional and entrepreneur specializing in the outdoor and hunting industries. Christian shares his journey from corporate roles to becoming the Vice President of Marketing at The Outdoor Group and eventually founding his own marketing agency.
Career Path and Roles
Christian began his career in various industries, including technology and snack foods, before a persistent recruiter led him to The Outdoor Group. There, he oversaw marketing for well-known brands like Elite Archery, Scott Archery, Custom Bow Equipment, Slick Trick Broadheads, and Duel Game Calls. His responsibilities included developing and implementing marketing strategies across multiple brands, managing graphic design, packaging, websites, and social media, building and leading a marketing team focused on collaboration and brand passion, and creating successful programs to engage loyal customers and enhance brand visibility.
Is there a project that you can tell us about that was especially successful in the space?
One achievement Christian shared was establishing a grassroots brand ambassador program for Elite Archery. Instead of relying on generic sign-up forms, he and his colleague Larry McCoy personally reached out to potential ambassadors through Instagram direct messages. This hands-on approach led to high-quality engagement by selecting individuals who already produced content aligned with the brand. It resulted in rapid growth, expanding the ambassador program to several hundred members within 45 days, and fostered deep connections between ambassadors and the brand. Innovative promotion methods emerged, such as ambassadors distributing branded merchandise to local archery shops, amplifying the brand’s presence at the grassroots level.
What advice do you have for people trying to break into the outdoor industry?
Christian offers some solid advice for anyone looking to enter the outdoor industry. First, he suggests leveraging skills you already have. Whether that’s in accounting, engineering, sales, or another field, because these skills are needed in the outdoor sector too. He emphasizes the importance of becoming tech-savvy; understanding and utilizing technology is crucial in modern marketing.
Networking is key. Christian recommends building relationships within the industry through platforms like LinkedIn or by reaching out directly to professionals. Starting small is perfectly fine. He advises engaging with brands you love by joining field staff or brand ambassador programs. Go above and beyond in your contributions, stand out by delivering more than what’s expected, and don’t hesitate to ask for feedback.
Immersing yourself in the brand’s voice and vision is essential. Make sure everything you do reflects the brand’s identity and values. This brand-centric approach can set you apart and open doors within the industry.
What are the top three Advantages and Challenges of Working in the Outdoor Industry?
The conversation also touches on the advantages and challenges of working in the outdoor industry. Among the advantages are the alignment of passion, as working in an industry that corresponds with personal interests in hunting and the outdoors can be fulfilling. There’s also a strong sense of community; being part of a close-knit industry where relationships often turn into friendships is rewarding. Additionally, there are opportunities to meet and collaborate with industry icons and influencers. On the other hand, challenges include market saturation and the difficulty in convincing loyal customers to switch to new or lesser-known brands. The industry often lags behind in adopting new technologies, presenting both obstacles and opportunities. Breaking through in a competitive market requires innovation and persistence.
Marketing Strategies and Consumer Engagement
Christian emphasizes several marketing strategies and the importance of consumer engagement. Actively seeking and incorporating consumer feedback is vital for improving products and services. Focusing on micro-influencers, individuals with smaller but highly engaged followings can result in more authentic promotion. Adaptability is crucial; being able to adjust strategies and content to fit different brands’ voices and market needs is essential. Recognizing that success often comes after years of dedicated work and not giving up when immediate results aren’t evident is key.
Regarding the future of the outdoor industry, Christian discusses the potential for growth post-pandemic. While explosive growth may not continue at pandemic levels, there’s an opportunity to maintain momentum. Encouraging experienced hunters to mentor newcomers and reduce barriers to entry can help sustain and grow the industry. Brands and professionals need to make hunting and outdoor activities more approachable and affordable.
Are there any skills that you see that seem to be in demand within the outdoor industry?

He emphasized that being able to adapt your style to match a brand’s identity and the willingness to continue learning are essential traits for success in the industry.
Do you think the outdoor industry will continue seeing growth in the coming years?
Regarding the future of the outdoor industry, Christian expressed cautious optimism. While he doesn’t expect the explosive growth seen during the pandemic to continue at the same pace, he believes there is an opportunity to maintain momentum.
Key factors include:
